Attractions

Sree Krishna Temple: The main attraction of Guruvayoor is the Sree Krishnaswamy Temple, a popular pilgrim centre and an important temple dedicated to Lord Krishna in Kerala. According to mythology, the temple is the creation of Guru, the preceptor of the Gods, and Vayu, the God of Wind. The eastern nada is the main entrance to the shrine. In the Chuttambalam (outer enclosure) is the tall 33.5 m-high gold-plated Dwajasthambam (flag post).
There is also a seven-metre high Deepastambham (pillar of lamps), the thirteen circular receptacles of which provide a truly gorgeous spectacle when fully lit. The square-shaped Sreekovil is the sacred sanctum sanctorum of the temple housing the main deity. The temple also has deities of Lord Ganapathi, Lord Ayyappa and Edathedattu Kavil Bhagavathy. Only Hindus are allowed into the temple.

Punnathoor Kotta (2 km from Guruvayoor temple - Open 0930-1730 hrs): Over 40 elephants are groomed at the Punnathoor Kotta ('Kotta' means fort). The elephants here are devotees’ offerings to the Guruvayoor Temple. The place provides you an opportunity to watch how elephants are reared and medically treated in the traditional manner. One can also watch the training given to elephants.

Thrissur: The nearby city of Thrissur is best known for its grand Pooram festival held in the Malayalam month of Medam (April-May). The festival is the most colourful and spectacular event in Kerala. Spectators from all parts of the State and even outside throng the Thekkinkadu grounds to watch the spectacle.
